Serbia/Visas

Paris, May 6, 2008
The European Commission and the Slovenian presidency appealed on Friday, April 18, for EU member states to facilitate the issue of visas for nationals of Serbia and other countries in the western Balkans. This appeal is made with a view to the complete easing of visa restrictions. It also signals the willingness of the European Union as a whole to back Serbia’s European vocation. Beyond the support we give Serbia to help it move closer to the European Union, we have decided to make full use of the flexibility referred to by the European Commission for Serbia to provide free visas to all individual applicants for whom that is a possibility, in complete conformity with the Schengen rules. The European Commission believes that this should allow about 80% of citizens to receive free visas. Most young people under 25 may now benefit from free visas.
