Attack against the International Committee of the Red Cross in Baghdad – Letter from Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, to akob Kellenberger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross
Paris, October 27, 2003
Dear Mr Kennenberger, France utterly condemns this morning's heinous attack against the International Committee of the Red Cross in Baghdad. On this day of grief and pain, I wish to extend to you, personally and on behalf of France, my most sincere condolences to the victims, their families and their loved-ones, and to the whole Red Cross. By attacking the ICRC, the terrorists have not just targeted representatives of the international community engaged in Iraq's reconstruction. They have sought to hit men and women committed to the value of humanitarian action, intent on courageously putting their hearts into fulfilling their mission in order to relieve the suffering of the Iraqi people. You can be sure that France, grateful to the ICRC for its work, is keen to provide you with all the support necessary to overcome this tragic ordeal. (complimentary close)./.
