THE LEGION OF HONOR

Insigna

CROSS

The insignia, first called a "star" or "eagle," then in 1814 "cross"was instituted by the decree of 22 Messidor, Year XII.

After 150 years, the general aspect of the jewel has not changed: a white enameled star of five rays surmounted on a wreath of leaves with a gold medallion in the center ringed by blue enamel.

THE CHAIN

Napoleon, taking his inspiration from the ancient orders of chivalry, wore the chains of the Order and awarded them to members of his family and a handful of Grands Dignitaires.

Since the Third Republic, the chain has become the particular insignia of presidents of the Republic, ex officio grand masters of the Legion of Honor.
